A relic of the early years of the Chinese Communist government of China.
Soviet China. Provincial Shaanxi-Sichuan Farmers & Workers Bank. One, two and three (1,2,3) chuan cloth banknote. 1933.

An unusual material used as money. Also a strong reminder on the humble and poor beginnings of the now powerful Chinese Communist Party and modern China.
This set was issued by a now defunct provincial bank for the community under the Soviet Chinese government which controlled parts of the Sichuan and Shaanxi provinces. This was largely a poor peasant territory and was without sophisticated minting technology. Hence the bank used cotton strips as material to stamp the designs on them for official use around the region.
They were issued only for 1 year and of limited circulation. The denomination used is Chuan 串 which is an old unit of string or bundle of coins.
